Chewing the Cud....look what the cool winds blew in.

  Sept. 15, 2007
--------------------------
Seems today was a day of great purpose for many of our does as I woke to find a great number of them "wagging and flagging" their tails;  the tell tale sign that they are in season and ready for introduction of the buck of our choosing.   So, the morning went along in an exciting flurry of activity; with my young sons helping to round up the said does and put them in with their "husband" for the day, as my little boys call it.
This is how it is with farm life.  You may have planned to paint the bathroom that day, but the does must take priority over all as they must be bred when the time is right.
Two days ago, I awoke to find the bucks in the eastern pasture running amuck along the road in front of our farm.  I was feeling relieved that at least I didn't see our donkey, Daunkershein, running loose.  Another minute's surveying found that indeed Daunker was strolling around the property freely.  UG !  Donkeys are wonderful creatures unless they are loose and do not want to be recaptured.  Our donkey has a taste for freedom and when he is loose, rarely does he see the pasture gate as inviting as the open spaces.  I was able to get a lead around his neck only to be slowly, but surely, dragged along behind him ( as I was too stubborn to let go of him).  My dear husband gave me a hand and the two of us were able to make the lovely creature submit to our plans and found himself quickly behind the gate once more. :) phew!
You may say to yourself, "Oh what a nuissance that is!"  But, I went away feeling invigorated .... thoroughly enjoying the unexpected events of the day.  I suppose that's what farm girls do.  By the way, if you haven't run across the book by Mary Jane Butters, the farm girl in you may just be missing a huge dose of validation.  My dear friend, Anna, gave me a copy of this delightful book and I savored every page of it.  In fact, now that I'm moved into the farm house, I need to unpack it and keep it near by.  Here is a link to see MaryJane's book on Amazon, encase you are interested.

Fresh as the fall winds......
Four Oaks Farm **  September 12, 2007

Here in Ozark, the cool winds have begun to blow and sweet rains have chased away the heat of the days.  What a crazy summer we had here...it was hot, busy, and long.
The farm house is nearing completion and we are inhabiting it as I write. :)
Happily, I wake to the sounds of roosters crowing, donkeys braying, and I can see the goat herd out my many windows.  Talk about satisfying!
We met a number of wonderful folks this year as the goat herd always affords us opportunity to meet people as we share our interest in raising these incredible fainting goats.
As this part of the web site is called "Chewing the Cud",  you might expect to read some interesting musing about farm life; alas, sometimes life is so hectic and full and sitting down to ponder (or chew the cud) is put off until a time when things are slower paced.  That is my excuse for such a dull offering today.  I'm hoping these fall winds will blow in some happy inspirations.
Now, we ready ourselves for a productive kidding season and begin to dream of the little ones we will enjoy bouncing around the barnyard again.
God bless you in the coming fall season and may all of your endeavors bring you contentment.

Sincerely,

Rhonda *****
